What characteristic defines an effective negotiation?

Both parties are satisfied with its conclusion

Mutual satisfaction defines an effective negotiation because the deal should be acceptable to both parties, not just one side. When the final terms meet the underlying interests of both buyers and sellers—price, timing, contingencies, and risk—each party feels the outcome is fair and workable. That sense of fairness boosts commitment to the agreement, reduces the chance of disputes, and supports smoother implementation and future dealings.

While efficiency and minimizing wasted resources are desirable aspects of the negotiation process, they describe how the negotiation was handled, not whether the result itself is effective. Preserving the relationship is important, but a deal that leaves one side dissatisfied—even if it saves time or protects the relationship—undermines true effectiveness. Therefore, the best measure of an effective negotiation is that both parties are satisfied with the conclusion.
